Volgograd State Medical University of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation, a Federal State Government-Financed Educational Institution of Higher Education (VolgSMU), is the oldest world-renowned university in the South of Russia founded in 1935. It is one of the largest medical and pharmaceutical science and educational centers in Russia, holding the second top place by its number of foreign students.

The VolgSMU is a holistic complex of continuous professional medical training providing 82 different degrees. Education is delivered by 1,091 professors including 2 Members and 1 Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 161 Sc.Ds and 573 Ph.Ds, 30 Honored Scientists and Doctors of the Russian Federation among them. About 6,000 students from 46 countries of the world study at the University. Since 1962 the University has been exporting its educational services in different fields of the classical Russian school of medicine which is respected and sought-after throughout the world. More than 40,000 high-skilled professionals with VolgSMU degrees work in 106 countries of the world.

The VolgSMU is a scientific and research center, an innovation and production center, and the key pillar of the chemical and pharmaceutical cluster of the region. The University structure comprises:  

• 6 faculties of: General Medicine, Medicine and Biology, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pediatrics, Social Work and Clinical Psychology;
• an Institute of continuous medical and pharmaceutical education;
• a Medical College;
• a Multi-discipline Clinic for 250 patients;
• a Family Clinic, established in cooperation with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (the USA);
• a Dental Care Center offering more than 300 types of services;
• an operational and training pharmacy;
• a Scientific and Pilot Production Center for innovative pharmaceuticals to design and develop new pharmaceuticals and drug substances;
• 3 minor innovative enterprises engaged in developing new technologies;
• a Center for Transfer of knowledge and research activity in medical and pharmaceutical science;
• dedicated publications: the BIOETHICS, the Bulletin of the VolgSMU, the Volgograd Scientific and Medical Journal, the Drug Newsletter, For Health Care Personnel newspaper;
